The Masjid Negara Ibu Kota Nusantara, also known as the Nusantara National Mosque, is a major religious landmark currently under development in Nusantara, the new capital city of Indonesia. It is located in zone 1A of the Kawasan Inti Pusat Pemerintahan (KIPP), the core government area of Nusantara. Upon completion, the mosque will serve as the central place of worship for Muslims in the capital and is designed to accommodate more than 61,000 worshippers.

Location and Site

The mosque is being constructed on a plot of more than three hectares. The site is part of a broader religious complex in Nusantara that will also include a cathedral, Buddhist vihara, Hindu pura, and Confucian kelenteng, emphasizing religious diversity and interfaith representation in the new capital.

Design and Architecture

Concept and Inspiration

The architectural design of the mosque is inspired by the shape of a turban (sorban), symbolizing modesty and spirituality in Islamic tradition. The original concept was developed by I Nyoman Nuarta, an Indonesian sculptor and architect best known for the Garuda Wisnu Kencana statue in Bali. His concept was later refined into a complete Detailed Engineering Design (DED) by Alien Design Consultant, an architecture and planning firm involved in multiple projects across Nusantara.

The mosque’s iconic dome mimics the flowing form of a turban, with dynamic curves and a futuristic silhouette. This design element is not only symbolic but also structurally complex, requiring specialized construction techniques.

Architectural Features

The mosque is expected to include:

  • A main prayer hall with large column-free spaces.

  • Separate areas for male and female worshippers.

  • Supporting facilities such as ablution areas, offices, meeting rooms, and parking.

  • Landscaped open spaces surrounding the mosque.

  • Integration with smart building features such as renewable energy and efficient water systems.

The use of local materials and Islamic architectural motifs are also key design principles, along with environmental sustainability.

Construction Timeline

The groundbreaking ceremony (peletakan batu pertama) was held in early 2024, marking the beginning of construction activities. The mosque is being built in stages, with target milestones aligned with the broader development of Nusantara’s government core. As of mid-2025, the construction is actively ongoing with significant visible progress on site.

Contractor and Development

While the main contractor handling the project has not been officially detailed in publicly accessible government publications, the project is managed by the Otorita Ibu Kota Nusantara (OIKN), in coordination with the Ministry of Public Works and Housing (PUPR). Development is funded as part of the national strategic projects within Nusantara.

Role in Nusantara

The Masjid Negara is designed to be the primary Islamic religious center in Nusantara and one of the largest mosques in Southeast Asia upon completion. Alongside other places of worship within the same zone, it is part of a national commitment to representing religious inclusivity while providing space for spiritual and communal gatherings.
