Is it safe?
Yes. Finished public areas have proper pavement and infrastructure like any city, normal footwear and sun protection is all you really need.
IKN's main public areas, Plaza Seremoni, Plaza Bhinneka, Taman Kusuma Bangsa, the plazas around Istana Negara and Masjid Negara IKN, and the viewing platform at Istana Wapres, are finished public infrastructure. Paved walkways, proper lighting, managed crowd flow via electric buses, this is not a muddy building site you need boots for.
The visitor numbers make the case better than any safety statement could. During the 2026 Eid holiday, over 350,000 people visited IKN in less than two weeks, with nearly 60,000 more during the Easter break shortly after. OIKN itself has noted these areas now function as much as public recreational space as a government center. That much foot traffic without notable safety incidents is a real, practical signal.
Comfortable closed shoes are still worth packing, especially if your day includes newer attractions like the glass bridge, glamping area, or a day trip to Bukit Bangkirai, where you're closer to natural terrain. Sun protection matters more than most safety concerns, given the heat and still-maturing tree cover in some newer plazas.
Outside the finished public areas, IKN is still very much an active build. Those zones are fenced off and not part of any visitor route, so the practical rule is simple, stay within designated public areas and electric bus routes, and follow staff instructions if asked.
