Smart City Cooperation Center

The Smart City Cooperation Center (SCCC) is a smart city research, collaboration, and technology demonstration center under development in Nusantara, the future capital of Indonesia, located in East Kalimantan. The project is a joint initiative between the Nusantara Capital Authority (Otorita Ibu Kota Nusantara, OIKN) and the Government of South Korea, aimed at supporting the development of Nusantara as a smart city through research, knowledge exchange, capacity building, and the demonstration of advanced urban technologies.

Construction of the facility officially commenced on 18 June 2026 in the Core Government Center (Kawasan Inti Pusat Pemerintahan, KIPP) 1A. The project is financed through a 9.9 billion South Korean won (approximately Rp115.9 billion or US$6.5 million) grant from the Government of South Korea. Of this amount, 5.5 billion won (approximately Rp64.4 billion) is allocated for the construction of the building, while the remaining funding supports the preparation of a Smart City Master Plan, Smart Building Protocol, academic cooperation, and capacity-building programs.

The SCCC is intended to serve as a center for bilateral cooperation between Indonesia and South Korea in the field of smart city development. Besides functioning as a research and innovation hub, the facility is designed to promote technology transfer, strengthen institutional and academic collaboration, and showcase smart city solutions that may be implemented throughout Nusantara.

The center is planned as a two-storey building with a total floor area of approximately 1,098 square metres. The ground floor will contain a control room and meeting facilities, while the upper floor will accommodate an exhibition area and an Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Robotics Laboratory. An outdoor area is planned for urban farming, serving as a demonstration site for smart urban agriculture and environmentally integrated city technologies.

Beyond the physical infrastructure, the project includes the development of strategic planning and educational initiatives. These include the preparation of a Smart City Master Plan and Smart Building Protocol by the Korea Institute of Civil Engineering and Building Technology (KICT), the establishment of the Nusantara Smart City Forum, and capacity-building programs conducted in cooperation with the University of Seoul. The project also involves collaboration with South Korea's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MoLIT), the International Contractors Association of Korea (ICAK), and the CJ OliveNetworks-led consortium, among other partners.

According to the Nusantara Capital Authority and South Korean officials, the SCCC is expected to facilitate knowledge transfer, academic networking, and long-term technological cooperation between the two countries. The project also draws inspiration from Sejong, South Korea's planned smart city, while supporting the development of smart city solutions tailored to the needs of Nusantara. Construction is expected to take approximately 10 months, with completion targeted for the end of 2027.
