IKN is still a large, active construction site, so the honest answer depends on where you are. Registering through the IKNOW app and being checked by a liaison officer (LO) at the gathering point (Rest Area IKN or Simpang Trunen) remains the standard requirement to get in. After that, you're no longer required to be escorted for the whole visit; you can walk around the areas that are genuinely open to the public, like Plaza Seremoni, Taman Kusuma Bangsa, and around Masjid Negara, at your own pace.

Exceptions during major holidays

During some long holidays, OIKN has occasionally relaxed this registration requirement or opened extra areas that are normally closed. Don't assume that kind of exception applies on a regular visit; treat IKNOW registration as still mandatory unless there's an official announcement saying otherwise for your specific visiting period.

Where the risk comes in

Risk shows up when visitors stray from the open areas, such as getting close to heavy machinery, crossing unfenced project boundaries, or entering parts of the city that haven't been declared open to the public. This isn't an area meant to be explored beyond the marked boundaries, even without a constant escort.

What you can do

Pay attention to signage and construction fencing, use the panic button feature in the IKNOW app if something goes wrong, and don't assume a spot is safe to approach just because it looks finished from a distance. Heavy machinery can still be operating around buildings that look complete.
