What to expect when you visit IKN, what's open, and how to plan your time on the ground.
Where's the best spot to see the construction progress?
The official IKNOW visit route takes you to Plaza Seremoni Barat, from where you can see Istana Garuda, Masjid Negara, Plaza Seremoni, and Taman Kusuma Bangsa, the areas that are most developed and actually designed to be visited.
Can I take photos of government buildings under construction?
Personal photo and video are generally allowed in visitor areas like Plaza Seremoni, but only at spots permitted by staff. Drones are generally banned over the Istana Negara area, which has national strategic site status.
Is it safe to be near active construction sites?
It's safe as long as you register through the IKNOW app and stay within the areas open to visitors. A liaison officer (LO) checks your registration at the gathering point, but once inside you can walk around open areas like Plaza Seremoni and Taman Kusuma Bangsa on your own.
What can I actually visit right now?
Yes. Free daily visits to the Government Core Area (KIPP), where you can see Istana Garuda, Masjid Negara, Plaza Seremoni, and Taman Kusuma Bangsa, run from 9 AM to 5 PM WITA, even though most of the surrounding city is still an active construction site.
Is it safe?
Yes. Finished public areas have proper pavement and infrastructure like any city, normal footwear and sun protection is all you really need.
Do I need a permit?
Not a formal permit, but registration through the IKNOW app is required for all visitors, individual or group.
Can I visit IKN now?
Yes, IKN is open, and it's already a working city with residents, offices, and hotels. It's just not a finished one yet, so expect an active construction backdrop wherever you go.
