Gunung Beratus, in Kabupaten Kutai Barat, has been a legally protected forest since the early 1980s, formalized by the Ministry of Forestry in 1992, making it one of the longest-standing protected areas in this collection, predating Nusantara itself by four decades. At roughly 28,261 hectares, it hosts 46 species on the IUCN Red List across mammals, birds, reptiles, and amphibians, plus 65 recorded plant species.
