Just across the border from Nusantara, in the city of Balikpapan, sits one of Borneo's most intact stretches of lowland primary rainforest: Hutan Lindung Sungai Wain (Sungai Wain Protection Forest), roughly 10,000 hectares of forest surrounded by land still recovering from past wildfires. Surveys between 2016 and 2022 recorded 42 mammal, 21 bird, and 4 reptile species here, alongside 53 recorded plant species.
