How much does it cost to get there?
Most visitors fly into Balikpapan, then drive roughly 75 minutes to IKN, expect around IDR 1.2 to 3.5 million for a full day of transport depending on how you travel.
Getting to IKN starts with getting to Balikpapan. Sultan Aji Muhammad Sulaiman (Sepinggan) International Airport (BPN) is the practical gateway for almost all visitors right now, since IKN's own airport, though physically built and operating since mid-2025, is still restricted to VVIP, government, and charter flights while it awaits the regulation needed to open commercially.
From Balikpapan, it's roughly a 75-minute drive to the IKN core, noticeably faster than it used to be thanks to toll road improvements, including the Pulau Balang bridge crossing.
For transport once you're there, a private car with driver for a full day, 8 to 10 hours, typically costs IDR 1,200,000 to 2,000,000 for a standard vehicle seating 1 to 4 people, not including tolls. If you'd rather have a guided experience, a full day tour with an English-speaking guide and lunch usually runs IDR 1,800,000 to 3,500,000 for a small group, with the exact price depending on season and whether nature stops like Bukit Bangkirai are included.
The public plazas themselves don't charge an entry fee, and registering your visit through the IKNOW app is free. Budget separately for parking or shuttle fees at busier sites, and for fuel or toll costs if you're self-driving.
These numbers move with fuel prices and demand, treat them as a planning estimate rather than a fixed rate, and confirm current pricing when you book transport or a tour.
