Sultan Aji Muhammad Sulaiman (Sepinggan) International Airport (BPN) is the practical gateway for almost all visitors right now, since IKN's own airport, though physically built and operating since mid-2025, is still restricted to VVIP, government, and charter flights while it awaits the regulation needed to open commercially.
From Balikpapan, it's roughly a 75-minute drive to the IKN core, noticeably faster than it used to be thanks to toll road improvements, including the Pulau Balang bridge crossing.
For transport once you're there, a private car with driver for a full day, 8 to 10 hours, typically costs IDR 1,200,000 to 2,000,000 for a standard vehicle seating 1 to 4 people, not including tolls.
